Dear Ladies

I hope you have all had an enjoyable and successful golfing season.

The website has now been updated in anticipation of the 2012 Ladies National Tournament to be held at Abridge Golf & Country Club on Thursday, 17^th May.

Hotel information was sent out some time ago and rooms should have been booked by all travelling teams.

The Committee had its annual meeting in November when any correspondence was discussed together with any matters arising from this year’s tournament.

To alleviate the problems some Clubs have in fielding a team, the Ladies National Committee has decided to reduce the number of players in a team to seven. This will consist of two pairs and three singles players. Only two of the three singles scores will count unless there is a tie, when the third score will be taken into account.

The Committee have also approved the use of Distance Measuring Devices for the Tournament. Full details of the rules regarding the use of these devices can be found under Tournament Rules on this website.

Further information regarding the arrangements at Abridge will be put on the website as soon as they are available so do keep checking.

AUTHORISATION TO RUN QUALIFYING COMPETITIONS & THE CENTRAL DATABASE OF HANDICAPS (CDH)

It is a requirement of the CONGU Unified Handicapping System (UHS) that all organisations wishing to run qualifying competitions gain authorisation from the English Golf Union (EGU) or the English Women’s Golf Association (EWGA).
If qualifying status is granted, all individual stroke play competitions must be run as Qualifying Competitions. The organisation will appear on the list of qualifying competitions as required under Clause 4.1(g) of the UHS.

In addition, from 2010 all organisations given qualifying status will be required to have access to CONGU approved software in order to allow the returning of all qualifying scores back to the players home club via the Central Database of Handicaps (CDH). On approval all organisations will be registered to the CDH.

Hole by Hole around Abridge – a course guide

Hole 1 – 384 Yards Par 4 SI 5

From the tee favour the right side of the fairway. Shots into the green need to be accurate as there is a large tree on the left hand side and bunkers that guard the green.

Hole 2 – 134 Yard Par 3 SI 15

Club selection is important on this hole! Always take one more club than you think as all the trouble is short of the green and out of bounds left.

Hole 3 – 382 Yard Par 4 SI 1

Large dog leg left. It is important to land ball in the large part of the fairway to give your self a clear uphill shot into the green. Very long hitters be aware there is a pond at the end of the fairway.

Hole 4 – 434 Yard Par 5 SI 9

Aim your tee shot to right edge of fairway bunker as the contours will take your ball onto the fairway. Favour right side of fairway and green for approach shots as it all slopes to the left bunker. There is out of bounds behind the green

Hole 5 – 406 Yard Par 5 SI 3

A very demanding dog leg right. Tee shot is vital as you need to be a certain yardage to be able to see the green. Hit second shot towards right side of the green as it slopes from right to left. This is a 2 tier green and most people end up short.

Hole 6 – 326 Yard Par 4 SI 11

Aim tee shot at pylon as the ball kicks left to right on this short dog leg. You will be left with a mid to short iron shot that you cannot miss to the right of the green. Again it all slopes left to right.

Hole 7 – 287 Yard Par 4 SI 13

A very picturesque par 4. Fairway slopes from right to left and it has a ditch running the full length along the left of the hole and swoops around the front of the green. Correct club selection for the second shot is very important you do not want to miss the green left.

Hole 8 – 338 Yard Par 4 SI 7

This is an easy tee shot as you have a big wide fairway to land on. Second shot is up hill to a blind green and always plays longer than you think. Take one more club to aim up towards the left hump by the green as the ball will kick down to the right hand side. It is beneficial to have your ball finishing on the right side of the green as you will have a much easier putt.

Hole 9 – 140 Yard Par 3 SI 17

This is a very pretty par 3 but do not be blinded by its looks, if you miss the green to the left you will sure to be out of bounds unless you get caught by 2 very deep bunkers. Favour the right side of the green as the ball will slope right to left towards the middle of the green.

Hole 10 – 351 Yard Par 4 SI 8

This tee shot is important as there is out of bounds all down the left hand side and a long row of trees down the right. Second shot requires good distance control and accuracy as it slopes away around the green. You want to land your ball on the left side of the green as it will roll around to the right.

Hole 11 – 358 Yard Par 4 SI 2

A very tough driving hole with out of bounds to the left. Tee shot will kick left to right. Second shot will be uphill so one more club will need to be taken. Knowing where the pin is located is important as it is a very fast green and you do not want to have a downhill putt.

Hole 12 – 342 Yard Par 4 SI 12

Out of bounds is down the left hand side and trees down the right. The fairway slopes from the left to right taking your ball into the trees. Aim your drive at the hump in the fairway and you should be safe. 2^nd shot does not want to be too long as this will leave you a blind chip back onto the green.

Hole 13 – 428 Yard Par 5 SI 10

An accurate tee shot is required as 2 bunkers cut into the fairway and you do not want to be caught out by them. If you play this hole as you see it you will not go far wrong. The green is 2 tiered so again knowing where the pin is placed will be beneficial as your putting with be put to the test.

Hole 14 – 418 Yard Par 5 – SI 4

The tee shot is not a problem, again fairway takes your ball left to right. Second shot needs to be accurate to lay up short of the pond leaving a clear, short iron to the green.

Hole 15 – 129 Yard Par 3 – SI 16

This is a long uphill par 3 where the club selection is very important, take one more club than you think. The green is guarded by bunkers at the front, trees and bushes surround the back. Missing the green left or right is a no no as you will be faced with a very tough chip.

Hole 16 – 420 Yard Par 5 SI 6

Aim tee shot to avoid fairway bunkers. Second Shot needs to be aimed up the right side as the ball will be encouraged to bounce round to the left. This will leave you with an easy pitch into a flat green. If you miss the green to the left you may be faced with a tough blind chip or even a bunker shot.

Hole 17 – 109 Yard Par 3 SI 18

A short par 3, which is guarded by 3 bunkers. Aim your tee shot on the left half of the green as the ball will roll round to the right. You do not want to go long from the tee as you will be chipping out of the trees.

Hole 18 – 286 Yard Par 4 SI 14

A short par 4 where your tee shot is important as there is out of bounds down the left hand side and a row of trees on the right. Bunkers surround the green so distance control for your second shot is important. If you go long you will be faced with a tough chip back onto the green.

Local Rules

1. OUT OF BOUNDS (Rule 27):

A ball is out of bounds if it lies beyond:

a) The perimeter of the course.

b) The fence behind the 1^st green, to the right of the 4^th hole and to the left and behind the 14^th hole.

2. IMMOVABLE OBSTRUCTIONS (Rule 24):

a) Building foundations within the trees.

b) The tarmac approach, concrete walls and guards rails of the reservoir on the 14^th hole and within the white line on the tee side of the wall. When relief is taken the ball may be dropped in the designated dropping zone (near the 13^th tee). When a ball lies on the tarmac entrance to the reservoir relief may also be taken by dropping the ball at the side adjoining the 14^th fairway, within one club length of the nearest point of relief no nearer the hole.

c) The path leading down from the top of the reservoir on the 16th hole. (The ball may be dropped at the nearest area of level ground no nearer the hole).

3. GROUND UNDER REPAIR (Rule 25):

a) Deep ruts and deep tyre indentations made by green keeping equipment.

b) All areas indicated by blue stakes or GUR notices and areas and areas circled by white lines. White lines at the approaches to the greens do not indicate areas of GUR but if a ball lands on the line it may be lifted and dropped within one club length no nearer the hole.

c) Plugged balls may be lifted and dropped through the green.

4. SPRINKLER HEADS (Appendix 1 Part B-5):

All fixed sprinkler heads are immovable obstructions under Rule 24-2. In addition, if a ball lies off the putting green but not in a hazard and such an obstruction on or within two club-lengths of the putting green and within two-lengths of the ball intervenes on the line of play between the ball and the hole, the player may take relief without penalty.

5. BUNKERS: Stones in the bunkers are movable obstructions. Rule 24-1 applies. Loose impediments may be removed from bunkers. If the ball moves, penalty one stroke (Rule 18-2).

6. PROTECTION OF YOUNG TREES: If a tree with a stake/rabbit protector interferes with a player’s stance or the area of his intended swing, the ball MUST be lifted without penalty and dropped in accordance with the procedure described in Rule 24-2B(i). The ball may be cleaned when so lifted.

7. LATERAL WATER HAZARDS

The ditch running alongside the left of the 8th hole and the area to the right of the 6th hole, marked with Red Stakes are Lateral Water Hazards. Relief may be taken under Rule 26-1.
